Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Through age, weight loss, weight gain and pregnancy, the abdomen can develop a flabby, unattractive appearance with excess skin and rolls. A surgical procedure known as abdominoplasty, or more commonly a "tummy tuck", can help to improve this by tightening the abdominal skin, removing excess skin rolls, and tightening the underlying muscles. The result is a tighter, flatter, more youthful abdominal appearance.

The tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin rolls and tightens loose abdominal skin while also improving the curvature of the waist and the appearance of the belly button. Liposuction may be performed at the same time for added definition in the waist and additional improvement in the sides. A less extensive mini-abdominoplasty procedure involving smaller incisions and shorter surgical times may be appropriate for some patients. Abdominoplasty may also be performed at the same time as a hernia repair, hysterectomy or other procedure as this can help to defray the total costs and allow for single recovery.

Surgical Procedure
Michael Diaz, MD performs most abdominoplasty procedures in the hospital using general anesthesia. Surgical times average two to three hours. During surgery, an incision is made along the lower abdomen between the hipbones and a smaller incision is made around the belly button. You will be asked to bring a pair of underwear that you would ideally like to cover the scar for Michael Diaz, MD to use as a guideline for positioning the incision. Once the incision is made, the doctor will tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess skin. The incisions will then be closed and a support garment will be applied to help control swelling. Surgical drains may be inserted at the incision sites to drain excess fluid. Most patients remain in the hospital overnight and are discharged the next morning after being seen by Michael Diaz, MD and having their dressing changed.

Post Surgery
Though you may walk in a somewhat stooped position, most patients are up and about once they return home. You may not feel comfortable walking upright for about a week. Michael Diaz, MD will prescribe medication to help control any discomfort that you experience. You will be seen daily by the doctor to have your dressing changed, and the drains will be removed within approximately five to seven days. Non-strenuous work can usually be resumed after one week. Heavy lifting or pushing will need to be avoided for up to six weeks, after which time full activity can be resumed. The support garment will need to be worn continually for six weeks.
