Thigh Lift Surgery

Loose, hanging skin can develop along the thighs for a number of reasons, including weight fluctuations, genetics, age and simple gravity. For some individuals, saddle bags and fullness of the inner thighs may remain despite even the best attempts at diet and exercise. Fortunately, a procedure known as the thigh lift can help to improve the appearance of the thighs.

Surgical Procedure
The outer thigh lift can improve the appearance of sagging skin along the outer thighs, including saddle bags. For this procedure, an incision is made on the thigh/waist area in order to lift sagging skin and remove excess skin. Liposuction is used to remove excess fat deposits. If there is minimal excess fat or saddle bag deformity, a special separating technique is used in place of liposuction and additional skin is removed. While the outer thigh lift may be performed on its own, the location of the incision often allows it to be combined with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or a lower body lift.

The inner thigh lift can improve loose skin of the inner thighs, decrease fullness in the upper thighs, and improve the overall contour of the thighs. This procedure begins with liposuction which is used to remove excess fat. Next, Michael Diaz, MD will make an incision on the inside of the groin crease. If necessary, for instance in cases involving more extensive deformities, the incision may extend to the inside of the leg. Sagging skin is lifted and excess skin is removed.

Michael Diaz, MD performs the thigh lift in the hospital using general anesthesia. Surgical times average two hours though the addition of liposuction may increase this time. The procedure is often performed on an outpatient basis, though patients desiring additional observation and comfort measures may choose to stay in the hospital overnight. On completion of the surgery, you will be placed in a special support garment which will need to be worn for six weeks. Every effort is made to place the incision and resulting scar as inconspicuously as possible. In many cases, the final scar can be concealed by most undergarments. You will be asked to bring a pair of underwear with you to your surgery which you would ideally like to cover your scar. Michael Diaz, MD will use this as a guideline when positioning the incision.

Post Surgery
Most patients are up and about immediately upon returning home after the thigh lift. The procedure is designed so that you can also sit immediately after your surgery. Michael Diaz, MD will prescribe medication to help control any discomfort that may result. Showering is allowed on the day after your surgery, and Michael Diaz, MD will see you daily to change your dressings. Non-strenuous work can usually be resumed after about one week, though you will need to refrain from heavy lifting or pushing for four to six weeks. You should be able to resume full activity after six weeks. Post-operative lymphatic massage is recommended to all patients as this can help to speed the recovery from swelling and improve the skin's final texture.
