| Protruding or prominent ears are a source of embarrassment for many. In fact, one’s overall appearance is greatly impacted by the shape and position of the ears. Disproportionate ears tend to draw excessive attention and can detract from an otherwise attractive appearance.
Fortunately, ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, can be performed to set back and reposition prominent ears. This surgery can be performed as early as six or seven years of age, and it’s often recommended that prominent ears in children be corrected before the first grade. Of course, otoplasty may be performed at any age, whether it be during childhood, adolescence or adulthood.
During surgery, Ross A. Clevens, MD, FACS can improve the position and prominence of the ears, altering the ears so that they lie closer to the head. The surgery does not affect the hearing or the shape of the ears. General anesthesia is commonly used on younger patients, while local anesthesia and sedation may be used for older children and adults. Surgical times generally average two to three hours. For most patients, work, school and other normal, non-strenuous activities may be resumed within five to seven days.
