Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
For some men, weight fluctuations, age, the use of some medications and hormonal imbalances can result in excess skin, fat and breast tissue in the chest. This can lend an undesirable feminine appearance to the male chest which can prove particularly embarrassing for some. Unfortunately, this condition is often not responsive to diet and exercise.
Male breast reduction is a procedure which can improve the appearance of female-like breasts in men. There are several different techniques which may be used, the most appropriate of which will depend upon the physical characteristics of your chest. Prior to surgery, a full evaluation and physical examination with lab work should be performed by your primary care physician to identify and treat the cause, if one exists, of the excess male breast tissue.
Surgical Procedure
Michael Diaz, MD typically performs male breast reduction as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia and sedation. Liposuction is the simplest of the techniques and is performed through small incisions. This may be combined with tissue reduction which is often performed through an additional small incision made at the bottom of the nipple. In some cases, the nipples may require repositioning. Once the surgery is complete, a compression vest is applied to the chest.
Post Surgery
Most patients are up and about immediately after surgery. Michael Diaz, MD will prescribe medication to help alleviate any discomfort that you experience. To monitor your recovery and activity level, you will be seen by the doctor on the day after your surgery and frequently thereafter. Work can typically be resumed after three to four days, though you will need to refrain from heavy lifting for about four weeks. Some patients may resume weight lifting sooner if the swelling has subsided. The compression vest will need to be worn for four weeks. |
