Breast Reduction

The excessive weight of very large, pendulous breasts can result in a number of medical problems. Women may experience back and neck pain, skin irritation, bra strap indentations on the shoulders, breathing problems, and skeletal deformities. Furthermore, unusually large breasts can be a source of extreme self-consciousness, particularly for teenage girls.

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure which can help. The surgery can reduce the size of large or pendulous breasts, improve the breast shape, improve the nipple size and position, make the breasts more proportionate to the body, improve the overall body contour, and eliminate related physical discomforts.

Michael Diaz, MD goal for breast reduction is to provide his patients with smaller, better-looking breasts that provide a more natural appearance while improving physical symptoms. There are several surgical techniques which may be used, the choice of which will depend on the amount of breast tissue that needs to be removed and the extent of extra skin present. You will be carefully examined and evaluated during your consultation and Michael Diaz, MD will explain in detail the surgical procedures and techniques that are best-suited for you.

Surgical Procedure
Most patients undergo breast reduction on an inpatient basis with an overnight hospital stay, though the surgery may also be performed on an outpatient basis. General anesthesia is used and surgical times average three to four hours.

Of the various surgical techniques available, the most common involves an incision which follows the shape of an anchor, circling the areola and then extending downward and ending horizontally in the crease beneath the breast. There are other techniques which result in less extensive scarring that may be appropriate for some patients. Once the incision is made, Michael Diaz, MD removes excess glandular tissue, fat and skin. He then reshapes the breast by moving the nipple and areola into a new, higher position. If there is excess fat in the armpit area, this can be removed with liposuction.

Post Surgery
On completion of the surgery, a surgical bra is provided for you to wear. This will need to be worn continually until the swelling and bruising have resolved which should occur within several weeks. During the first few days of your recovery, you may experience some discomfort which can be relieved with medication prescribed by Michael Diaz, MD. Some patients report an immediate relief from back pain as well as increased sensation in the nipples. Though you will be up and about within a couple of days after your surgery, you will likely need to take a week off from work. Most normal activities may be resumed after one month but until then heavy lifting and pushing will need to be avoided.
