Breast Augmentation

Many women feel self-conscious about their breasts, whether it be due to their breast size, changes which have occurred over time or for other reasons. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure which can enhance the appearance of the breasts with the use of implants.

Breast augmentation can increase the size of the breasts to improve the overall shape of the body, restore lost breast volume resulting from weight loss or pregnancy, and balance out differences in shape or size. The procedure can also be combined with a breast lift to improve the shape of sagging breasts or those which have lost their fullness. With each breast augmentation procedure, Michael Diaz, MD aims to provide his patients with the breast size and shape that they desire while also creating a natural look and feel.

There are many different options available in breast implants. The two types of implants include saline implants and silicone gel implants. Both are comprised of a silicone shell, one of which is filled with saline and the other with silicone gel. Both have been approved by the FDA and are considered safe. While saline implants are currently the most popular choice, silicone gel implants have a unique feel that can prove a better option for some patients. Both implants also come in a variety of sizes and shapes.

Breast implants also come in two different textures, smooth and textured, with smooth implants being the most popular option. As for the shape, they can be either round or anatomical (a teardrop or tapered shape). The appropriate shape will depend on the individual's anatomy and body shape. The profile of an implant refers to the projection, or how far the implant pushes the breast tissue forward, and the choices include low, medium and high profiles. In cases where the chest is narrow, a higher profile will allow for the use of a larger implant. The diameter refers to the width of the implant at its base and this is determined by the patient's own breast width. As for the implant placement, there are two options including the submuscular placement, in which the implants are placed behind the pectoralis muscle, and the subglandular placement in which the implants are placed behind the breast gland. The submuscular placement tends to be the most common choice.

Office consultation
There are many considerations which must be taken into account when choosing the appropriate implant. Because of this, the consultation is a very important process. During this time, you will discuss your desires and concerns with Michael Diaz, MD as well as your medical history. The doctor will evaluate your breasts, and your breasts and chest will be measured for their existing diameter, projection and nipple location. All of these factors will help Michael Diaz, MD to develop a surgical plan designed to meet your goals for your desired breast cup size and shape. Also at the consultation, you will be able to model implant samples in your bra. You should bring your favorite top with you to try on over the different implant sizes to determine what you like best. Pre- and post-operative photographs will also be provided for you to review.

All details of the surgical procedure, including the options for incision and implant placements, will be explained at this time and Michael Diaz, MD will counsel you on those options which can best meet your expectations. You can expect the initial consultation to last about an hour, sometimes longer, due to the level of detail, the many available choices and the extensive counseling.

Surgical Procedure
Michael Diaz, MD typically performs breast augmentation on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia. In some cases, local anesthesia and sedation may be used. As this is a fairly straightforward operation, surgical times average one to two hours. An appointment with Michael Diaz, MD will be scheduled for the day after your procedure so that the doctor can ensure that you're doing well.

Post Surgery
Patients often feel tired and sore after undergoing breast augmentation and Michael Diaz, MD will prescribe medication to help alleviate any discomfort you experience. Non-strenuous work can usually be resumed within a few days while many other normal activities can be resumed within a week. After three weeks you should be able to return to most activities.
