Plastic vs. Cosmetic Surgery
When seeking cosmetic surgery, one can be confused by the terms “plastic” and “cosmetic” surgery. Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty that is dedicated to the transformation of the body either for cosmetic purposes or to improve function (reconstructive surgery). Plastic surgery encompasses both endeavors of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, which are often performed together in the same patient. That is to say that some procedures that improve function also have a cosmetic benefit. Cosmetic surgery emphasizes procedures to enhance appearance only. Any licensed physician can call himself or herself a cosmetic surgeon, so the importance of finding a properly trained and certified provider is crucial. Cosmetic and plastic surgeons have different requirements for medical training and accreditation. While plastic surgeons may provide some cosmetic procedures, cosmetic specialists generally do not perform plastic surgery.
