Arm Lift Surgery

Loose, hanging skin can develop along the upper arms for a number of reasons, including age, changes in weight, genetics, and simple gravity. Even after weight loss, the arms may retain a full, unattractive appearance. Fortunately, there is a surgical procedure known as brachioplasty which can improve the appearance of the arms.

Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, can improve loose skin and fullness of the arms as well as hanging skin along the armpits. Brachioplasty often incorporates liposuction techniques for additional improvement. It may also be performed with other procedures such as a breast lift or upper body lift for those seeking maximum improvement.

Surgical Procedure
Michael Diaz, MD performs the arm lift surgery in the hospital using general anesthesia. The surgery may be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis depending on the patient's preference. Surgical times average about two hours, though the addition of liposuction or other procedures will increase this. If liposuction is being used to remove excess fat, it will be performed first. For the arm lift procedure, Michael Diaz, MD will make an incision beginning in the armpit and extending along a portion of the inner arm. For patients requiring maximum correction, the incision may extend to just above the elbow on the inside of the arm. For those who want excess skin and fat removed from the sides, the incision can extend below the armpit. Working through the incisions, Michael Diaz, MD will tighten and reshape the underlying supportive tissue and remove excess skin. The incisions will then be closed and a special compression garment will be applied to the arms.

Post Surgery
Most patients are up and about once they return home. Michael Diaz, MD will prescribe medication to help control any discomfort that occurs. Showering is allowed on the day after surgery. You will be seen daily by Michael Diaz, MD to have your dressing changed. Non-strenuous work may usually be resumed one week after the arm lift procedure. Full activity may be resumed after six weeks, and before this time heavy lifting and pushing should be avoided. The compression garment will need to be worn on the arms for four weeks. Post-operative lymphatic massage is recommended as it can help to resolve swelling more quickly and improve the skin's final texture.
